Love makes the difference

'Diakonia Agapes', for example, enabled the building of twelve new day care facilities in various parishes for 800 children, in which children's learning abilities are promoted in a comfortable and child friendly atmosphere.

Furthermore, 'Diakonia Agapes' promotes education for women in health centres and, particularly in rural areas, a mobile advisory service, in which women can learn basic skills in healthcare and hygiene. Various school programmes teach children and young people how to take good care of their own health.

Under the motto 'Love makes the difference', the Orthodox Church of Albania launched many social service initiatives. The 'Diakonia Agapes' organisation was founded especially for this purpose.

Building bridges between the generations

Young people are involved in many social projects, for example, they visit old and needy people. The aim of this approach is to unite the faith of the young people with a social commitment, so that they will be capable of assuming responsibility in society.

Due to the continuing difficult economic situation, 'Diakonia Agapes' remains dependent on the support of partner churches abroad in order to continue its important work.

Funding from 'Churches helping Churches': 50,000 euros per year (2006-2010)

The Local Situation

Albania is regarded as one of the poorest countries in Europe. Almost half of the population lives below the poverty line and the mortality rate is very high. Shortly after the political upheaval, the Orthodox Church started to develop diaconal and social service structures.

Church communities created meeting points in various cities, where young people can do sports, learn foreign languages or music, or take part in numerous other activities which are on offer. In the summer holidays, camps are organised.
