The 'Churches helping Churches' initiative focuses on the worldwide funding of projects that are important for the witness and service of the churches. Along with pastoral care, this includes a particular concern for the social work of the churches.
'Churches helping Churches' was founded in the mid-fifties. The initiative was the response of Protestant churches in Germany to the extensive aid they received during the post war period from partner churches abroad. The German churches wanted to express their gratefulness and give something back in return for all the solidarity they had experienced.
There are still churches today, all over the world, which need inter-church aid and solidarity. These churches are perhaps facing new challenges, or having to extend their area of pastoral work, or need help in overcoming sudden crisis periods. 'Churches helping Churches' supports pastoral programmes as well as the churches' social services.
Coordination and Cooperation
The support of project partners is based on solidarity within the Christian faith and ecumenical relations. In the selection of partners to contact and in the allocation of funds, 'Churches helping Churches' works in partnership with representatives of the 'Union of Evangelical Churches in the Evangelical Church in Germany' (UEK), as well as other inter-church aid organisations. These agencies include 'Brot für die Welt / Bread for the World', 'Hoffnung für Osteuropa / Hope for Eastern Europe', 'Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe / Diaconal Emergency Aid', the Protestant Development Service (EED), the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (DNK), the Gustav-Adolf-Werk (GAW) and the Martin Luther Association (MLB).
